Searching for the best pistols in India, you’ll see numbers like .30, .32 and .45 everywhere. They describe the bore: the inside diameter of the barrel, and roughly the width of the bullet. Bore affects recoil, size, power and cost. In India it also affects which licence category a firearm falls under, which we cover fully in our NPB vs PB guide.
What is bore (calibre)?
Bore is measured in fractions of an inch or in millimetres. A .32 is about 7.65 mm, a .30 is about 7.62 mm and a .45 is about 11.43 mm. Indian dealers and licences use both, so it helps to know both.
.30 bore: 7.62x25mm Tokarev
- Diameter: About 0.308″ (7.62 mm).
- Origin: A Soviet-era pistol cartridge, still used in many pistols worldwide.
- Character: A small, fast bullet. It has a flat, snappy feel and strong penetration for a pistol round.
- Recoil: Moderate, sharper than .32 but with a narrow grip-friendly frame.
- Category: NPB.
- Note: “.30” also refers to rifle cartridges like .30-06. Here we mean the pistol cartridge only.
.32 bore (7.65 mm)
- Diameter: About 0.312″ (7.65 mm).
- Character: Light recoil, compact guns and easy control. A good first handgun.
- Category: NPB.
- Trade-off: Less energy than .30 or .45, so shot placement matters.
.45 ACP bore
- Diameter: About 0.451″ (11.43 mm).
- Character: A large, heavy, slower bullet that delivers high energy. It is a classic in handguns.
- Category: NPB.
- Trade-off: More recoil and larger guns.
What is a .45 compact pistol?
A .45 compact is a shorter, lighter .45 ACP pistol with a shorter barrel and grip for easier carry.
- Barrel: About 3.5 to 4.25 inches.
- Capacity: Often 7 to 10 rounds.
- Trade-off: The same heavy bullet in a smaller gun gives sharper recoil and muzzle flip.
- Bore: Compact versions use the same .45 ACP cartridge, so the category stays the same.
What is 9mm?
9mm (9x19mm Parabellum, or 9mm Luger) fires a bullet of about 0.355″ (9 mm). It is the world’s most common handgun cartridge, used by police, militaries and sport shooters for its mild recoil, high magazine capacity and wide ammunition availability.
- Compared with .45: Lighter recoil and more rounds, but less bullet mass.
- In India: 9mm is a restricted/prohibited category, so it is not available as a normal civilian purchase.

Which pistol calibre should you choose?
- Beginners and compact carry: .32, for light recoil and easy handling.
- Higher power in a slim frame: .30 Tokarev.
- Maximum stopping power: .45 ACP, if you can handle the recoil. A gun you can shoot accurately beats a powerful one you flinch from.
