Two pistols with the same calibre and mechanism can look and wear very differently. The difference is the finish. At Capricorn Art Works, you can choose a base Cerakote finish or a premium diamond-like coating (DLC), in black, silver or gold, with laser engraving available on any of them. This guide explains how they differ and which combination suits you.
Quick answer: Choose Cerakote for a durable, good-value everyday finish. Choose DLC for a premium, glossy, more scratch-resistant finish that lasts for years. Add laser engraving to either to personalise your pistol. Engraving is a customisation on top of a coating, not a replacement for one.
Why the finish matters
A finish does more than decide how a pistol looks:
- Corrosion protection: It shields the metal from moisture, sweat, dust and humidity, which matters across much of India.
- Wear resistance: It reduces scratches from holstering, handling and cleaning.
- Appearance: It sets the character of the pistol, from understated to showy.
- Maintenance: A good finish makes cleaning easier.
What a finish doesn’t change is the calibre, power, mechanism or legal classification. Those depend on the cartridge and design, as explained in our calibre guide and NPB vs PB guide.
Base finish: Cerakote
What it is: Cerakote is a ceramic-based coating applied as a thin, even layer and then cured. It is widely used across the firearms industry.
- Options: Matt black and gloss.
- Look: Matt gives a low-glare, understated, tactical look. Gloss is smoother and more polished.
- Strengths: Good corrosion protection, solid resistance to everyday wear, and strong value for money.
- Best for: First-time buyers and everyday users.
- Limits: It will show wear sooner than harder coatings under heavy, repeated use.
Premium finish: Diamond-Like Coating (DLC)
What it is: DLC, or diamond-like carbon, is a very hard carbon-based coating known for hardness and low friction. It is also used in demanding applications beyond firearms, such as engine and tool components.
- Look: Glossy and premium.
- Strengths: More scratch resistant than Cerakote, a distinctive premium appearance, and designed to last for years with proper care.
- Best for: Buyers who handle their pistol often or want a premium piece.
- Limits: It costs more. No coating is scratch-proof, and DLC still needs regular cleaning.
Laser engraving
What it is: Laser engraving permanently marks a design into the surface. It is available on every finish and colour, with many designs to choose from.
- Strengths: A one-of-a-kind look with crisp, precise detail. Because it is cut into the surface, it doesn’t peel or rub off like paint or a sticker.
- Best for: Gifts, collectors, and buyers who want something clearly their own.
- Good to know: Engraving adds appearance, not protection. The coating underneath does the protecting.
Colours: black, silver and gold
All three colours are available on both Cerakote and DLC.
- Black: The classic choice. Understated, versatile and good at hiding minor wear.
- Silver: Bright, clean and modern.
- Gold: A bold, premium statement, popular for showpieces and luxury collections.
Darker finishes tend to look more discreet, while brighter ones draw more attention.

Common myths
“Any coating makes a pistol scratch-proof.”
No coating is scratch-proof. Harder coatings like DLC resist scratches better, but all finishes can show wear.
“A premium finish improves accuracy or power.”
Finish affects looks and durability, not ballistic performance.
“Engraving weakens the pistol.”
Properly done laser engraving is a surface marking and isn’t meant to affect function.
Which finish should you choose?
- On a budget or buying your first pistol: Cerakote.
- Want the most scratch-resistant, premium option: DLC.
- Want something personal or a collector’s piece : Add laser engraving to any finish.
- Prefer a discreet look: Matt black.
- Prefer a luxury product: Gold or silver DLC, with engraving.
Care tips for any finish
- Wipe down after use, especially after sweat or humid conditions.
- Clean with non-abrasive products, and avoid harsh solvents the coating supplier doesn’t recommend.
- Store dry, locked and away from children.
- Check edges and contact points for wear and address it early.
